JBQ, Technical Lead Of AOSP, Reasons The Delays In Updates, Praises Sony

Here’s some praise for Sony (they need some), and some perspective on why the Android updates are delayed. And it comes from Jean-Baptiste Queru, Technical Lead of the Android Open-Source Project, what we generally call AOSP.

SONYAOSPJBQPRAISE

Know why Sony’s been pushing updates faster than the others? It’s because they’ve been actively taking part in contributing code to the AOSP, meaning they have to make less changes/modifications when a new version of Android is announced and the source code is released. JBQ reasons -

Since Sony has been contributing a lot to the Android Open Source Project, they have fewer changes that they need to maintain on their own: those changes of theirs are already there when the source code is first released. That’s probably one of the reasons why they could get done faster: the work they did preparing those contributions gave them a head start. I don’t think that any other manufacturer has been contributing nearly as much as Sony did, so everyone else is now going to have to play catch-up.

That’s a lot of praise, but only true. The Japs have been actively coordinating with the devs, and the community as well. The CyanogenMod Team is indeed a witness to this. The company has also explained the process of updating devices to the latest and greatest version of Android, bringing about a level of transparency that other companies neither desire, nor are worthy of.
