Samsung and Sony Ericsson announcements

Wham Bang Slam! That’s what happened yesterday at the pre-MWC events by Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. While Nokia didn’t have any new devices to show off, Samsung and Sony Ericsson showed off quite a few. We now finally have a successor to the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Tab, from Samsung. Sony Ericsson showed off the Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, and Xperia Pro, carrying the Xperia legacy off in style.

Samsung –

As I said earlier, Samsung announced successors to it’s flagships – the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Galaxy S II

The Galaxy S II features a S-AMOLED+ display, a successor to the S-AMOLED display that first appeared on the Wave. It’s a 4.3 incher, and Samsung says it’s the best ever display, surpassing LCD IPS by leaps and bounds. As rumoured, it comes with a 1 GHz dual core Orion processor, along with an 8 MP snapper that does full HD (1080p), NFC support. There’s Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, so you don’t crib, besides GPS, a-GPS and Android 2.4 with latest version of Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz UI. Apart from these, there’s Bluetooth 3.0+HS, 3 axis Gyroscope sensors alongside the Accelerometer. The Galaxy S II should be retailing for around 700 Euros when it becomes available.

Galaxy Tab 10.1

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 gets it’s name from the 10.1” display it flashes. The entire focus was on the Galaxy S II, so you know there’s not much Samsung had to talk about. Anyways, it features a WVGA res screen (1280×800), an 8 MP main camera (a bit too much) and a 2 MP FCC (impressive). And ofcourse, it can do HD recording and playback. It is powered by a Dual-Core Tegra II processor and comes with Honeycomb (Android 3.0). The display is a TFT unit, which is a bit disappointing. Ofcourse, it does HD recording. Pricing is not known yet, but it will be available by March exclusively on Vodafone.

Sony Ericsson –

SE impressed us quite a bit. To be honest, they announced nothing new, but they ahead of Samsung in terms of number of announcements. They announced 3 new devices – the Xperia Play, Neo and Pro.

Xperia Play

First comes the Xperia Play. Aimed at taking gaming on Smartphones to new heights, the Xperia Play is aimed at gaming freaks and PSP fans. It packs a 4” FWVGA res display, powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor alongside an Adreno GPU, that will allow you to play 3D games at 60 FPS. There’s a 5 MP snapper as well. There’s a slide-out ‘playboard’, making gaming on touchscreens easier and delightful than ever before. And a perfect example showing that HW buttons can never be replaced by ‘oh-so-awesome’ touchscreens.

Xperia Neo

Coming to the Xperia Neo, it features a 3.7” FWVGA display, powered by the Bravia Engine and branded as the ‘Reality Display’. It also comes with an 8 MP camera with Exmore R sensor and yes, it can do HD.

Xperia Pro

The Xperia Pro is an Xperia Neo with a slide-out QWERTY. Rest of the specs remain same.

All the above Smartphones will come with Gingerbread (v2.3). Note that they don’t come with the latest Gingerbread version, i.e., v2.4.
