Samsung Announces Galaxy Grand In India – 5″ WVGA Display, Android 4.1.2, Rs. 21,500

Samsung Galaxy Grand

At an event held in Mumbai today, Samsung announced the latest entrant in its Galaxy line-up of Android smartphones. They call it the Galaxy Grand, and it comes with a lot of features for upper mid-range device.

It comes with a 5″ LCD display of WVGA resolution (800×480 pixels) and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with the latest version of Samsung’s custom UI, TouchWiz. It’s not Nature UX, though, as we’ve seen on the Galaxy S3. Which reminds me, it looks a lot like the Galaxy S3. Remember when the S2 was the flagship, Samsung had launched a couple of phones resembling it? So it’s a known path.

Here are the specs at a quick glance –

  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI
  • 5.0″ LCD display of WVGA resolution (800×480 pixels), ~187 PPI
  • 1.2 GHz dual core processor
  • 8 MP main camera, LED flash, 1080p recording; front facing 2 MP camera
  • 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal memory, expandable by another 64 GB with a microSD card
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • 2100 mAh battery, microSIM
  • Launch price: Rs. 21,500; Availability: First week on February onward

That’s a great device at the price. I remember HTC selling absolutely low mid-range devices at that price, and the Galaxy Grand thus sounds even better at that price. However, there’s Micromax’s A116 Canvas HD, which will also be available beginning first week of February, and at a ~25% lower price. Should be interesting to watch how these two devices fare.
