Sony Xperia Ion HSPA, Xperia Miro, Xperia Tipo And Xperia Tipo Dual Announced

Boom. Sony just announced four new Android smartphones today – Xperia Ion HSPA’s a high end smartphone, the Xperia Miro is a low mid-ranger and the tipo and tipo dual are low-end smartphones. Sony can’t stop trolling us enough. As far as my memory serves, they have launched/announced about a dozen smartphones in the past 4-5 months itself. Classic example of an Asian company.

Sony Xperia Ion HSPA

Coming to the announcements, the first one is the Xperia Ion HSPA – it was announced at the CES earlier this year, but sans HSPA support. This one comes with HSPA, but still runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. I won’t bore you with specs in paragraphs, so let me make it easier for you to skim through -

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with Sony’s custom UI on top
  • 4.6″ HD display, 1280×720 pixels, Mobile Bravia Engine
  • 1.5 GHz Dual core Qualcomm processor
  • 12 MP rear camera, Exmor R sensor, ability to take pics in 1.5 seconds, front facing 1.3 MP camera
  • Playstation games support
  • 1900 mAh battery

Sony Xperia Miro

Next is the Xperia Miro – a lower mid-range Android device which comes with a 3.5″ display of 480×320 resolution, at which, I laugh out loud. Heck, the processor is clocked at a paltry 800 MHz. But unlike the high-end Xperia Ion HSPA, the Xperia Miro comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, at launch. Can’t believe they’re making a mess of it all. Anyway, the specs are below -

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with Sony’s custom UI on top
  • 3.5” display, 480 x 320 resolution
  • 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A processor
  • 5MP camera, video recording at 30 FPS; Front-facing camera for video chat between smartphones, tablets and PCs
  • Deep Facebook integration with contacts, gallery and the music player for sharing and discovery
  • Customizable illuminations for incoming messages and social updates
  • Contactless DLNA connectivity to easily view content like photos and videos on a TV, tablet and PC
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Available in black, black/pink, white and white/gold colors

Sony Xperia Tipo

Lastly, the dua of Xperia Tipo and Xperia Tipo Dual – both come with 3.2″ displays of the same, 480×320 resolution, and the same 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A processor. The Xperia Tipo Dual is nothing but the Tipo with dual-SIM support.

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with Sony’s custom UI on top
  • 3.2” scratch-resistant mineral glass display
  • 3.2MP camera, front facing video calling camera
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Available in red, white, blue and black

I wonder what’s going on in the minds of Sony’s product managers – they launch a device with Gingerbread, when ICS was announced 6-7 months back? Apparently, they’re preparing the ICS update as we write, but it’s ironical to see a high-end device launch with a 19 months old OS, and the lower-mid range and entry level devices come with the latest version of Android? Hilarious.
