VillainROM Bring Gingerbread And HTC Sense 2.1 To Desire Z

One thing that’s really cool about Android is the ability to slap Custom ROMs. But this is not for the faint hearted, as the process involves rooting the device and following the steps precisely. Also, this effectively voids your warranty until you can bring back the device to it’s original state. Well, moving on, VillainROM team has released the world’s first (AFAIK) Gingerbread ROM for HTC Desire Z (or the T-Mo G2) with HTC Sense 2.1 support.

A v1.1 of this ROM was already out by the time this was being written, fixing an issue that wouldn’t allow installation of apps from SD Card. Pretty swift. There are, however, some known issues like –

  • Camcorder hangs when pressing record
  • Bluetooth does not work
  • HTC Hub fails to log in
  • The “card” mail widget does not work
  • Landscape mode in Sense is bugged
  • Question mark doesn’t work on hardware keyboard
