If you carry out most of your work on your laptop, one thing that you will quickly come to realise is that it is not the most comfortable device to work on. Sitting down for long periods of time at a computer is never particularly good for your posture, but when you are working on a laptop it becomes worse.
Laptops force you to crouch over the computer as you type, making it less ergonomic and more likely to end up causing you aches and pains in your neck, shoulders and back.
So how can you avoid this uncomfortable situation?
The best thing that you can do is use your laptop as a desktop computer. This is remarkably easy to do, and there are a number of ways that you can go about it.
The first thing that you will need is an external keyboard and mouse. These could be wireless and connect by bluetooth, or they could connect to your computer via USB ports. Either way, they will be essential.
The most simple way to use your laptop like a desktop computer is to rest it on top of a pile of large books. Place enough books in the pile until the top of the screen of your laptop is at eye level, and this is the height it should be at for you to work comfortably.
If you don’t want to sit your laptop on top of a pile of books, you could invest in a laptop stand instead. This will allow you to open up your laptop and rest the base at an angle so that the screen is again at a more comfortable height. You will then be able to type on your keyboard and use the mouse exactly as you would if you were using a desktop computer.
Your posture will be a lot better because you will be able to sit up straight and look directly at the screen rather than crouching over your screen to work.
Another option that you could consider is investing in an external monitor. Most monitors these days can connect to an external monitor, and you can then use this monitor just as you would a desktop computer, with your laptop placed to one side. Portableuniverse.co.uk sell a range of cheap laptops that can connect to monitors and allow you to use them as a desktop. You may even want to invest in a docking station for your laptop so that you can use it as a desktop without even having to open up your laptop.
To make your work even more comfortable, you could consider investing in an ergonomic keyboard and mouse. Whether you do this or not, make sure you also invest in a comfortable chair that provides good lumbar support or you could find your back beginning to ache.
One of the most important things of all is to avoid using your laptop for long periods of time without a break. Always try to stand up and stretch once every half hour or so, as this will help you to avoid the common aches and pains associated with sitting at a desk for long periods of time.
