Its been a while since Nokia announced their next mobile in the Nseries lineup – the N8. Many people have even got a prototype for testing. Its got many many rave reviews too. Boasting of features like 12MP camera, 720p video recording, 3.5” capacitive touchscreen etc etc.
But, yes but, a majority of us have had a common doubt – will it be upgradable to S^4? Here we have the answer – yes, it will be! If you’re still in doubts, i have a quotation, from the developers themselves. Here’s what Mark Wilcox has to say,
As for S^3 upgradeability to S^4, it depends on the capability of the hardware to run the new version of the platform and the willingness of the OEM to do the significant amount of work need to port the software.
This is easy for Apple with very few device models. Android is a bit of a mixed bag but you usually get some updates for a device.
Nokia smartphones are often cheaper than the competition because they use the minimum hardware required for a decent experience with the platform – that often means the hardware isn’t capable of running the next version!
So there you go, from the developers themselves. The only issue in upgradation would be, will Nokia offer the upgrade? For those who think that it wont, they’d be ignorant. For, Nokia is already bleeding and it needs to beef up its activities, specially in the smartphone segment.
The N8, with all its specifications, is currently on top of my smartphones list. Though i haven’t got one for testing (Nokia, are you listening?), i’m satisfied its the best Nokia ever. And its prototype beats the established ones hands down!
Now, it would be wise enough for Nokia to let the users upgrade to Symbian^4. By not doing so, its just gonna bleed more. But, what if they dont provide? Nothing. There’d be many enthusiasts out there who could come out with an update.
The N8 ought to be capable of running S^4, the processor is a little underpowered but it has graphics acceleration and a good amount of RAM. I have no idea whether Nokia will offer an upgrade or not though.

Again, the ball’s in Nokia’s court now.
Below are some screenshots of S^3 and S^4.
What do you think? Will Nokia provide the upgrade?
