After the success of the 41MP Nokia 808 PureView, Windows Phone fans were hoping for a similar camera in the Lumia 920. Nokia however failed to keep up to the expectations despite the amazing low light capabilities of Lumia 920.
New rumours suggest hat Nokia might announce “Project EOS” at MWC this year. (EOS is also the brand name for Canon DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras so I am taking this news with a pinch of salt)
Going into the details, the Lumia 920 successor will have 1/1.2 inch sensor. There is no info regarding the resolution yet. Nokia 808 uses a special companion processor to process the information from those 41 million pixels before sending them to the main processor. The same is not possible in WP8 because Microsoft has set very well-defined hardware specifications. Such an off the chip solution wont be compatible with many apps. So Nokia might opt for an 8 or 12 megapixel 1/1.2″ sensor along with mechanical OIS seen in Lumia 920.
Since this is a rumour, I am allowed to let my imagination fly. Qualcomm (official WP8 chipset provider) had announced Snapdragon 800 with Adreno 330 GPU. They also said that we will see this chipset in smartphones in Q2 this year. Digging into the details, Adeno 330 supports camera resolution upto 55 megapixels(!) and upto 4K video. So a 41 MP Lumia is very much possible 😉
